Our Facility

The Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (SCCR) is located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The building stands adjoining to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECRH) and is consequently centrally located in uptown Fredericton. Please click here to view a map of where the SCCR is located.

The SCCR is a new, state of the art facility which was opened in 2006 but is part of a much longer legacy. The two-story building houses three interdisciplinary teams and offers on-site accommodation to patients through either the Transitional Living Suites (TLS) or the Nursing Unit. Adjacent to the SCCR is the Stan Cassidy Kiwanis House, which offers accessible accommodation, and Atlantic Canada’s only fully accessible rehabilitation Therapeutic Park.

Kiwanis House

The Kiwanis House facility is an accessible, self-contained 3-unit patient hostel located beside the Stan Cassidy Center for Rehabilitation (SCCR). The hostel suites have been designed for patients and families requiring outpatient assessment and/or rehabilitation. We are proud to be able to offer an accessible, low-cost alternative to patients and their families.

All units are equipped with a full kitchen and dining area, living room, bedroom, and bathroom with washer and dryer. Unit #2 houses a roll in shower. Items found in each unit include double sleeper couch and single sleeper chair, single hospital bed (unit #2 double hospital bed), lift for the bed and bathroom, tub transfer bench, and commode chair. Additional items available upon request include a sleeper cot, highchair, and playpen. Bed and bathroom linens are stocked regularly in each unit. Guests are responsible for providing their own groceries and all personal items. Maximum capacity for units #1 and #3 is five (5) people, maximum capacity for unit 2 is six (6) people.

Each guest is required to complete a Kiwanis House orientation prior to their stay with the orientation being renewed every 12 months.  Guests can check in 365 days per year between 2:00pm and 7:30pm. The cost is $25 per night and payment is due at check in; we accept cash, cheque, debit and credit. Guests are required to be checked out of their unit by 11am on the day of departure.

Stan Cassidy – The Man and his Legacy

To those who live in Fredericton or who have visited the SCCR, “Stan Cassidy” is recognized not only as a man’s name, but as a symbol of the dedication and innovation which resulted in the establishment itself. Stan Cassidy was an engineer who was born and raised in Fredericton. With a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Doctor of Laws Degree, Mr. Cassidy was an enterprising and lively businessman who passionately wanted to help individuals with special needs of New Brunswick play a meaningful role in society. He recognized that the lack of rehabilitation facilities east of Montreal was an obstacle for many of these people and took the initiative to change it.

In 1957, Mr. Cassidy brought a plan to the NB Minister of Health and Social Services and within less than a year and a half the doors of the Forest Hill Rehabilitation Centre were officially opened. After his death in 1993, the Forest Hill Rehabilitation Centre was renamed the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation in honor of Mr. Cassidy and the impact he had on rehabilitation services in New Brunswick.

In 2006, a new neurological rehabilitation facility was built directly beside the Dr. Everett Chalmer’s Hospital. This facility proudly took on the name “Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation,” along with the mandate to deliver neurological rehabilitation across the province of New Brunswick.

At the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, all employees work together as part of a greater, specialized team with the goal of leading their patients towards independence. Our highly trained healthcare professionals come from a variety of disciplines and, alongside their dedicated support staff, work within one of three specialized rehabilitation programs: adult services, paediatric services (autism and neuromotor) or assistive technology services (assistive seating, adaptive driving, augmentative communication and rehabilitation engineering).

About SCCR

Goal, Mandate and Approach

Most health care services in New Brunswick are arranged in 3 groups: Community health services (Extra Mural Programme), hospital based services (such as Regional Hospitals) and specialty services (such as cardiac, neurosurgery and rehabilitation). These groups are sometimes called primary (community), secondary (hospital) and tertiary (specialty) and all collaborate together with Social Development to provide full health services. They can be thought of as one very large team. 

The Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (SCCR) is a specialty, tertiary, Centre equipped and staffed to treat the most complex neurological conditions. These conditions include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy, ALS and cerebral palsy. The Centre also provides treatment for the most complex forms of autism spectrum disorder.

Teams of rehabilitation specialists work together with patients to make sure that all aspects of a patient’s needs are understood and addressed. The many professional disciplines collaborate daily to provide client- and family-centred treatment programs. Since we are part of the larger team of health service providers, we work closely with community, hospital based and social services so that the full range of benefits are available to patients. Also, since many of our patients are children we work closely with the school systems.

The goal of SCCR is, by including patients as part of the team, to achieve as much independence and self-direction for the patient as possible. This is done by combining medical and therapeutic skills as well as rehabilitation technologies.

SCCR provides services, in both official languages, to inpatients (there are 20 inpatient beds) and outpatients, and the Centre serves people of all ages in New Brunswick.
