(Horizon) December 5, 2016 - Horizon Health Network (Horizon) has created the Horizon Community Health Recognition Awards to acknowledge and pay tribute to individuals and groups that are making a difference to improve overall health in their community. 

"Good health is more than just good health care. Good health actually starts where people live, work and play', said John McGarry, President and CEO of Horizon Health Network. "Horizon's mission is  'Helping People Be Healthy' which is why we're looking to celebrate individuals and or groups that are making a difference in helping communities be healthier." 

Three awards each in the Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton and Saint John areas will be granted for a total of twelve awards being handed out by Horizon. Winners will receive $500 towards their charity and a plaque. 

Horizon plans to recognize people, and or groups, that understand the importance of health and well-being and are working to improve the factors that negatively impact population health in their community. 

The Community Recognition Health Awards will be awarded based on the following categories.

Seniors Wellness
Youth Wellness
Multicultural Health
Food Security
Accessibility
Mental Health 

The categories were selected to match reoccurring themes from the Community Health Needs Assessments completed by Horizon. 

"We know that there are so many people in our communities coming up with new and creative ways to help many at risk groups, and we want to say thank you", said Jean Daigle, VP of Community for Horizon Health Network. "We look forward to learning more about these initiatives and recognizing their efforts to help New Brunswickers of all ages grow and thrive". 

Individuals or groups can apply or be nominated. More information can found on Horizon's website. Applications are due on February 17, 2017 and winners will be announced in April at Horizon's Board Meeting. 

Winners will be selected by Horizon's Local Community Engagement Committees in Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton and Saint John.
