Horizon reminds people to know their HIV status
(Fredericton) September 14, 2018 - Horizon Health Network is reminding people of the importance of knowing their HIV status and getting tested for all sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI). Testing can be booked quickly and easily through Tele-Care 811.
STBBIs such as HIV and gonorrhea are on the rise in the Fredericton and Oromocto areas, resulting in a 175 per cent increase in reported HIV cases. In 2018, these areas accounted for 69 per cent of new HIV cases in New Brunswick.
STBBIs can be found through simple blood work and/or a urine test. It is a fast and effective way to know your status.
Protect yourself and reduce your risk of HIV by using a condom. People with a high risk for HIV are encouraged to speak to their health care provider about medication such as PrEP.
Call Tele-Care 811 to book an
appointment. Contact your local Public Health office or talk to
your health care provider if you have questions about STBBIs such
as HIV.
