N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer begin their five-day cycle

(HORIZON) June 24, 2019 - The fifth N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer event has officially begun. The physician-led team of cyclists began their five-day, 500 km cycle this morning, leaving from Horizon Health Network's (Horizon) Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic at The Moncton Hospital (TMH) at 9 a.m.

"Horizon is extremely grateful and proud to have such dedicated physicians and staff as part of our organization," said Karen McGrath, Horizon President and CEO. "Their willingness to go above and beyond to improve the patient care experience is commendable and should be celebrated."

In four years, over $250,000 has been raised to enhance patient care at Horizon's Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic. These funds have directly improved care for cancer patients and their families. The late Dr. Sheldon Rubin's wife, Sharon Rubin, was on-hand to send the cyclists off on their journey.

"Patients are the reason we started this event and our main motivator," said Dr. Mohammed Harb, a Horizon Medical Oncologist and event founder. "A cancer diagnosis is not easy, but we want our patients to know we are here for them and willing to go the extra mile to ensure they have the care they need."

This year, proceeds from the ride will be used to replace a much needed patient lift for the oncology in-patient unit, blood pressure monitors, IV pumps, scales and various furnishings to make the oncology in-patient unit and clinic more comfortable for patients and their families.

"Each year this event is becoming much larger and is now well recognized, "stated Ruth Dunnett, Administrative Director at the Moncton Hospital. "The welcome the cyclists receive en route during the week is wonderful and very much appreciated by the team!"

During the 2018-19 fiscal year, Horizon's Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic had 18,000 patient visits. This number continues to increase as patients live longer thanks to new innovations and treatments.

The cyclists began their five-day journey at Horizon's The Moncton Hospital and will visit two other Horizon locations along their route. They will depart from the Miramichi Regional Hospital Wednesday, June 26 at 9:30 a.m. and depart from the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton Thursday, June 27 at 9 a.m.

Cyclists are pleased to be joined this year by Dr. Krzysztof Wierzchoslawski, a family physician in Miramichi who sees many of his patients being treated at the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic.

Donations can be made online at, by mail to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation (135 MacBeath Ave., Moncton, NB, E1C 6Z8), in person at the Friend's Kiosk located in the main lobby at TMH, or by calling 506-857-5488.
