Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day: Reshaping the Lives of Breast Cancer Patients

(Saint John) September 23, 2014 - Breast Health Program in Saint John will celebrate the 2014 Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day) by holding a public information session to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Dr. Margie Wheelock, from the Saint John Regional Hospital, will discuss the latest techniques in breast reconstruction, navigating the medical system and body image changes that surround mastectomy and reconstruction. Women who have undergone the reconstruction surgery will be on hand to share their breast cancer journey, their decision to have reconstructive surgery and how it has impacted their lives.

The session will be offered on Wednesday, September 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Saint John Regional Hospital amphitheater on level one. The session is free of charge and no registration is necessary.

Research shows that seven out of 10 women are not aware of their breast reconstruction options following mastectomy, and that less than one fifth of women who undergo a mastectomy go on to have reconstruction. Do you know your options? Attend this important information session and find out why breast reconstruction is an important option that all breast cancer patients should be aware of.
