Horizon announces new Chief of Staff

(Horizon) June 21, 2018 - Dr. John Dornan will assume the role of Horizon Health Network's Chief of Staff from Dr. Tom Barry this July. The announcement was made during Horizon's quarterly Board Meeting and Annual Meeting held today in Miramichi. Dr. Barry ends his ten year term in that position on July 1, 2018.

"Dr. John Dornan is a seasoned medical leader with proven concern for the health of our patients - he is supportive of good ideas that emanate from patients, physicians, hospital staff and Horizon leaders," said Karen McGrath, Horizon's President and CEO. "We are excited for what lies ahead for our organization hailing from his new position on Horizon's leadership team."

As Horizon's Chief of Staff, Dr. Dornan will be responsible to the Board of Directors for the quality of medical care provided by all medical staff across the organization. Dr. Dornan will work collaboratively with Horizon's CEO and will be an active, participating member of Horizon's Executive Leadership Team.

Dornan has been practicing medicine since 1987 when he joined Horizon's Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) as a Staff Endocrinologist. He served as Chief, Department of Internal Medicine at SJRH from 2005 to 2011, and as Chief of Staff for the Saint John Area from 2011 to 2017 where he served as an active member on the Horizon Regional Medical Advisory Committee. Most recently, Dr. Dornan practiced as an Endocrinologist in Saint John. In July, he will continue to practice endocrinology in addition to his new responsibilities.

He has been an Assistant Professor with Dalhousie University since 1993 and with Memorial University since 2000. A lifelong learner, Dr. Dornan recently completed his MBA at the University of New Brunswick. In his spare time Dr. Dornan is a member of many health-related associations and societies.

Horizon thanks the outgoing Chief of Staff, Dr. Tom Barry, who's contributions to the health care profession are exemplary; he has touched the lives of so many, not only within our organization but also throughout New Brunswick. Dr. Barry will remain with Horizon to provide clinical leadership support to the CEO for quality improvement projects.

"We are thankful for Dr. Barry's dedication, medical guidance and leadership to Horizon over the last ten years," said Dr. Edouard Hendriks, Horizon's Vice President Medical, Academic and Research Affairs. "This marks the end of his tenure as Chief of Staff, but his patients can take comfort in knowing he will continue with his family practice."
