New Brunswick Heart Centre surgeon receives national recognition

(SAINT JOHN) October 29, 2012 - Horizon Health Network is pleased to congratulate Dr. David Bewick, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and The Heart Function Clinic with the New Brunswick Heart Centre, on being the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Society of Echocardiography Achievement Award. Dr. Bewick accepted the award yesterday during the annual Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC) in Toronto.

"Horizon Health Network is proud of Dr. Bewick's accomplishment of receiving this distinguished award," said Donald J. Peters, President and CEO, Horizon Health Network. "The recognition is a testament to his innovation in the field of echocardiography and a reflection of the contribution that Dr. Bewick delivers on a daily basis to the patients of the New Brunswick Heart Centre."

Dr. Anthony Sanfilippo, past president of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography and current member of its Board of Directors, feels Dr. Bewick exemplifies what this award represents. "The Canadian Society of Echocardiography Achievement Award is a national award presented to an individual for their outstanding contribution in the field of echocardiography. Dr. Bewick's dedication has made him a leader in the field and he has advanced the goals of the society."

Dr. Bewick received the award for his career-long dedication and contribution to the field of echocardiography. He is an active member of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography Board of Directors and is a national, leading expert in the field of stress echocardiography. Dr. Bewick is distinguished by his contribution to this field through his lead role as Chairman of the annual New Brunswick Heart Centre Symposium. For the last 22 years, Dr. Bewick has organized and chaired the symposium, which unites health-care professionals from across the country to connect, share, and learn about the latest in cardiovascular health care. Dr. Bewick has been a clinical cardiologist since the 1980s and has been a member of the New Brunswick Heart Centre since 1991. He is also a member of the Dalhousie University faculty.

"The Division of Cardiology and Department of Medicine of Dalhousie University are thrilled to congratulate Dr. David Bewick on his well deserved award," said Dr. Catherine Kells, Division Head of Cardiology at Dalhousie Medical School. "Dr. Bewick has been a outstanding leader in clinical and educational echocardiography for the past 20 years and we are proud to have him as a colleague, friend and member of our faculty."

Canadian Cardiovascular Congress is co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. The congress brings together 20 organizations involved in cardiovascular health. This structure encourages specialists working in different areas of cardiovascular disease, from basic researchers to clinicians to people delivering community health programs, to share knowledge and build on strengths.
