The Sussex Health Centre Celebrates its 40th anniversary

Horizon Health Network's Sussex Health Centre (SHC) celebrated forty years of patient care today. Over the past 40 years, the SHC has been providing the community of Sussex the healthcare services they need, close to home.

"The staff, physicians, and volunteers at the Sussex Health Centre have made a significant impact on the people in this community," said Brenda Kinney, Executive Director of the Saint John area. "We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to providing the best possible care to our patients in the years to come."

Horizon Health Network President and CEO, Karen McGrath, congratulated staff on reaching this milestone.

"Today we look back at 40 years of patient care and reflect on all the great things that have been accomplished in this facility," she said. "Patients and visitors walk through these halls every day and are helped by our dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers. There is a lot to celebrate."

The SHC is an acute care hospital made up of 25 inpatient beds and provides patients with services such as: laboratory, diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, ambulatory clinic and emergency department.  With the addition of the IV day hospital patients requiring IV therapy can schedule an appointment rather than presenting at the emergency department.

In the last fiscal year there were over 22,000 Emergency Department visits, 364 admissions and 1,546 day surgeries performed.

"The Sussex Health Centre has changed significantly since it opened its doors in 1977," said Geri Geldart, Vice President Clinical, Horizon Health Network. "From technology and equipment to the services being offered, the manner in which healthcare is delivered at the SHC is constantly evolving and improving."

Established in 1977 to replace the Kings County Memorial Hospital, the SHC was opened to provide all facets of healthcare under one roof. The construction and subsequent opening of the SHC was a longstanding goal of the community, one that now has been met for forty years.

The SHC is fortunate to have the ongoing support of the Sussex Health Centre Foundation and Auxiliary. These volunteer-run organizations raises much needed funds to improve the day-to-day lives of patients through equipment, technology and infrastructure upgrades.
