What Your Hospital Pharmacists Want You to Know


March is Pharmacy Awareness Month and Horizon's Pharmacy team plays a big role in managing the health of patients and clients.

Horizon has over 240 pharmacy staff, including over 100 pharmacists. Our pharmacy staff work in outpatient clinics and on patient care units in large and small hospitals. They work as part of a collaborative team with many other health care providers.

To wrap up the month, we're sharing some great advice from our Pharmacy team.

"Don't be afraid to ask questions! Patients who are actively involved in their care and talk about their experiences while taking medications have the best outcomes. Let your pharmacist know about all medicines you are taking, and always mention any new or worsening side effect you may be experiencing." "Pharmacists truly want to help patients. Beginning a treatment for cancer can be both frightening and overwhelming. Don't be afraid to ask questions about any aspects of your care. Don't be afraid to share your experiences or any new or worsening side effects and/or symptoms you may be having." Anne, pharmacist in the Oncology Clinic at Horizon's Miramichi Regional Hospital

"Have an accurate and up-to-date list of medications when presenting to the Emergency Department." Liam, clinical pharmacist in the Emergency Department at Horizon's Saint John Regional Hospital  

"Medications work best when taken as prescribed. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about when or how to take your medications. If remembering to take medications is an issue, there are lots of aids available, such as blister packs, dosettes (sealed, single-serving packs of a product) and reminders that your pharmacy team can assist you with." "Our Pharmacy team wants to understand any issues or concerns patients and their family/friends may have with taking medication. We encourage patients (and their caregivers) to ask the necessary questions to understand any changes to their medication regimen at the time of discharge from hospital. For example: Do you understand which medications you need to continue, start or stop upon leaving hospital? For new medications, do you know what they are used for, how they may help you (and your condition) and what possible side effects to watch for?"
