COVID-19: Resuming priority elective surgeries

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Elective Surgeries

As of Monday, May 11 Horizon is beginning to resume priority elective surgeries.

All patients scheduled to receive priority elective surgery will be tested for COVID-19 symptoms at our COVID-19 Assessment Centres within three days of their planned surgery date and will be asked to self-isolate until they come to hospital.

Please note: Surgical cases where patients have been waiting longer than the recommended timeframe will be priority, with further priority given to cancer and high acuity cases.

Preparing for surgery looks different during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are more precautions in place to keep patients, clients, families and health care workers safe. We encourage you to review this information sheet before your surgery and any scheduled appointments.

Resuming outpatient clinics and other services to support elective surgeries

Some urgent and critical services in our hospitals will resume to allow for additional priority elective surgeries.

These services include:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Laboratory services (blood and specimen collection)
  • Diagnostic Imaging (X-ray)

Services will be provided by appointment only.

  • Arrive within 15 minutesof your appointment, unless directed otherwise. If you arrive earlier, you may be asked to wait in your vehicle.
  • If you arrive without an appointment, you will be asked to return home and contact your health care provider.
  • Emergency Department visits do not require an appointment.

Arrival times for surgical procedures may differ from other appointments. Follow the directions provided by your health care provider.

Upon arrival for your appointment, you will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms, and asked to wear a mask and clean your hands. We encourage you to wear your own mask; if you don't have one, one will be provided.
